What is a Hybrid-Online Course?
A Hybrid-Online course is taught through a combination of online work and face-to-face classes. If enrolled in a hybrid-online course, your student would attend a face-to-face class about once per week and complete the rest of the coursework online.
Does this count as a real high school class?
YES! A Hybrid-Online course is taught by Marina High School teachers and counts towards a student’s graduation requirements in exactly the same way as a face-to-face course
Aren’t online courses less rigorous?
All Marina Hybrid-Online courses are taught by the same teachers who teach the face-to-face courses on our campus. All Hybrid-Online course content is developed and delivered by Marina teachers, ensuring that a Marina Hybrid-Online Course is of the same quality as a face-to-face course.
Will my student be expected to be on campus? What about attendance?
Students will not be able to enroll in more than two hybrid online courses, so your student will be expected to regularly attend their face-to-face courses five days a week.
During the period that a student is scheduled in a Hybrid-Online course, they are not expected to attend class everyday. For this reason, Hybrid-Online courses are often scheduled at the beginning and end of the regular school day.
When a Hybrid-Online course is scheduled to meet for a face-to-face session, it is imperative that your student attend. Since they will meet face-to-face less frequently with their teachers, any absences from the face-to-face component of a Hybrid-Online course can be severely detrimental to a student’s progress.
The schedule of face-to-face meetings will be made by your student’s teacher and will be given to students on the first day of class. Be aware, however, that teachers may also have participation requirements calling on students to log in to Canvas, our Course Management System, on a regular basis. Students who do not regularly login and complete assignments will fail a Hybrid-Online course.

What technology is required?
Since students complete a large portion of the work in a Hybrid-Online course through the internet, students need regular and reliable access to a computing device and the internet. Devices such as phones are ok sometimes, but for long-term success it is recommended students use a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. All students have access to computers and the internet at the MHS library and the Huntington Beach Public Library.
How are students graded? How can I know how my student is doing?
Students are graded regularly on the assignments they complete.
Student progress for Hybrid-Online courses is reported regularly to parents/guardians the same way as a face-to-face course, with quarterly report cards and final semester grades.
Many teachers also post grades to the HBUHSD Parent/Student Portal, which provides more detailed information about student progress.
